Space Cadet: One of the Worst Movies of 2024
Space Cadet Review
Introduction
Ladies and gentlemen, let's rock this. I present to you
one of the worst movies I've seen all year. That's right, at the end of this
year when I'm listing the worst of the worst movies of 2024, Space Cadet will
end up among the top 10. That's how bad it is. Space Cadet is not funny, it's
super cringe, it's poorly written, poorly performed, and poorly put together.
It badly wants to be some sort of a Legally Blonde with space ambitions and
with a little touch of mistaken identity plot, the kind that you used to see
Jack Black doing all the time. But Space Cadet fails miserably on all fronts
because nothing about it is charming or inspirational. This movie is just
trash, absolute trash.
Space Cadet Trailer
Plot Overview
Written and directed by Liz W. Garcia, in Space Cadet,
Tiffany Rex Simpson has always dreamed of going to space, but life isn't going
quite as planned. Determined to turn things around, she aims high, and with the
embellishing touch of her supportive best friend, her doctored application
lands her in NASA's ultra-competitive astronaut training program. In over her
head, Rex relies on her quick wits, moxy, and determination to get to the top
of her class. NASA program directors certainly take notice, but can this
Florida girl get through training and into the cosmos before she blows her
cover?
Failed Ambitions
Hey look, I've got nothing against girl boss movies,
but they have to be done right, and Space Cadet doesn't do it right. In fact,
this movie might unwittingly give bigots out there who hate equality a reason
to say, See, what did I tell you? Anything you can do, I can do better. The
humor falls flat every single time. I understand that Emma's character
supposedly doesn't know much about science, math, or engineering. In other
words, she's kind of a dunce. But the way that writer-director Liz Garcia plays
that off into a string of jokes is disastrous, like nails on a chalkboard. It
hurts my eyes and my ears at the same time.
Lack of Coherence and Chemistry
You see, this is what happens when you don't have a
co-writer to bounce ideas off of, when you think your own humor is funny, but
you're the only one laughing. Nobody else is laughing with you. And I'm sure
Liz Garcia was in her room, in front of her laptop, without anybody around
telling her that her ideas were actually not all that bright.
Performances
Emma Roberts is both annoying and unlikable. I didn't
even think she was acting since Emma Roberts in real life also has the same
reputation – annoying and unlikable. It turns out she's just playing a version
of herself in this one, and there's a point in this film where I'm like, Why is
she still yapping? Why is she still talking? Would you please shut the hell up?
Poppy Liu plays Emma's best friend, who creates the
lies and covers for those lies again and again. That becomes like a running gag
that gets more childish and more irritating with every passing minute. And for
a couple of people who play influential workers at NASA, Tom Hopper acts like a
babbling bumbling idiot, and Gabrielle Union looks disinterested like she'd
rather be anywhere else – after the paycheck clears, of course.
Impact on NASA's Image
The saddest part about this whole thing is that Space
Cadet fails to make NASA enticing. In fact, it kind of hurts NASA's cause. In
this day and age when Elon Musk's SpaceX basically steals the thunder away, and
the public opinion about NASA seems to be dwindling at an all-time low, movies
like this really don't help at all.
Final Verdict
Overall, I give Space Cadet a rating of one out of
five. Please skip this movie. Save yourself from curiosity. Otherwise, it'll be
90 minutes you'll never get back. You do not want to live with that regret.
Avoid this movie at all costs. I repeat, avoid this movie at all costs.
Summery
Space Cadet, written and directed by Liz W. Garcia, is
one of the worst movies of 2024. Aiming to be a Legally Blonde with space
ambitions, it fails miserably with unfunny, cringeworthy humor and poor
execution. Emma Roberts stars as Tiffany Rex Simpson, who lands in NASA's
astronaut training program through a doctored application. The film's attempts
at comedy fall flat, and the performances are disappointing, with Roberts being
particularly annoying. Additionally, the movie does a disservice to NASA's
image. Overall, Space Cadet is a tedious, poorly made film deserving of a one
out of five rating. Avoid it at all costs.
