It's What's Inside (Netflix) Review: A Twisted, Darkly Comedic Thriller
It’s What’s Inside Review |
Introduction
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you mashed
up Face/Off with Freaky Friday and threw in a bunch of dark comedy? That's
exactly what you get in It's What's Inside — a highly convoluted and mishmash
story that will leave you feeling like your brain has been tossed in a blender
and set to puree. But does that icky feeling make for a good viewing
experience? Let’s dive in and find out.
A Premise Full of Chaos
The story kicks off with a group of friends reuniting
for a prewedding celebration. But things quickly descend into an existential
nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious device capable of
swapping minds. That’s right—this wild contraption allows one person’s
consciousness to end up in the body of another. Naturally, the group turns this
into a messedup version of Guess Who, where the stakes are much higher than
just some playful fun.
The film’s creativity, from its premise to its visual
execution, is among the most original I’ve seen in a long time. It draws
comparisons to Face/Off, where Nicolas Cage and John Travolta famously swapped
roles. But here, instead of just two actors, there’s a large ensemble cast,
which makes the potential for mindswapping chaos much greater.
Stellar Acting: A Game of Guess Who
One of the most impressive aspects of It’s What’s
Inside is how well the actors embody the personalities and mannerisms of other
characters after the mind swap. Watching these actors convincingly portray each
other's roles is mindbending, and the audience is left playing the game along
with the characters.
As the film progresses, the layers of drama unveiled
early on set the stage for total pandemonium. You might think you know how
things will unfold, but the complexity of the story will likely have your
guesses turning out wrong.
Visual Storytelling and Anarchy
Visually, the film is a treat, with the narrative
spiraling into overdrive as it barrels toward anarchy. We are given insight
into what’s occurring beneath the surface—characters may look one way on the
outside, but their swapped personalities give us a window into their inner
turmoil. This adds to the confusion but makes for an even more enjoyable
viewing experience.
From a pacing perspective, the film knows when to slow
down and build tension, and when to crank things up to full throttle. The
moments of chaos and anarchy are exhilarating, and the pressure of trying to
keep up with all the mindbending details adds a layer of excitement.
Unlikable, Yet Compelling Characters
While each character is deeply flawed and often unlikable, their complex relationships and hidden motives add richness to the story. One character is selfish and obsessed, while another is intensely jealous, creating emotional tension. The story brilliantly weaves in themes of doubt, distrust, and scheming. At the same time, it asks an intriguing question: What would you do if everyone thought you were someone else?
Each character’s flaws serve to maximize tension,
leading to dishonest interactions and conflict, which ultimately pushes the
narrative forward.
A Rushed and Simplistic Ending
For the majority of the film, I was ready to give it a
perfect score. However, the ending leaves much to be desired. After building up
so much suspense, the film falters by choosing a rushed, simplistic conclusion,
giving viewers a ton of exposition instead of maintaining the smart
storytelling that made the first twothirds so enjoyable.
The Fade to Black device, followed by an exposition
dump, feels like a copout. While it doesn’t fully ruin the film, it prevents it
from reaching the heights it was aiming for.
Final Verdict
It’s What’s Inside is a smart, unique thriller that
uses flawed characters and mindswapping chaos to create tension, anxiety, and
explosive twists. Even with the rushed ending, the film’s creativity, tension,
and performances make it a wild ride you won't forget. If you’ve been longing
for originality in your thrillers, this one should be at the top of your list.
Summery
It’s What's Inside is a darkly comedic thriller about a group of friends who reunite for a prewedding party that spirals into chaos when one brings a mindswapping device. As personalities are swapped, the actors skillfully portray each other's characters, adding layers of complexity and tension. The film explores flawed characters and fractured relationships while keeping viewers guessing with its creative twists. Visually captivating, the movie balances moments of calm and anarchy. However, the rushed ending, relying on exposition, weakens an otherwise brilliant narrative. Despite this, it’s an exciting and unique watch, earning a 4 ½ out of 5 couches.
